Ed. 12/15
Driscol Galleries, Vail, Colorado; Private collection, California.
Glenna Goodacre (American, 1939-2020) Jill, 1983 Bronze with greenish brown patina 58 inches (147.3 cm) high Ed. 12/15 Inscribed on right thigh: G. Goodacre 12/15 PROVENANCE: Driscol Galleries, Vail, Colorado; Private collection, California. LITERATURE: G. Goodacre, Glenna Goodacre: Sculpture, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2009, p. 60, another example illustrated. Born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1939, Glenna Goodacre began her artistic journey in childhood with painting, but it was sculpture that truly captured her heart and imagination, and launched a prolific career that continued until her passing in 2020. Goodacre's art is characterized by its dynamic representation of human figures, ranging from expressive portraits to intricate scenes. One of her most renowned works is the Vietnam Women's Memorial, located in Washington, D.C. Another significant contribution by Goodacre is the design of the Sacagawea dollar coin, introduced by the United States Mint in 2000. Her depiction of Sacagawea, poised and determined with her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back, has become an iconic image, reflecting the artist's commitment to highlighting the roles of women in history. Goodacre's body of work extends beyond these notable examples. Her sculptures, found in public and private collections across the United States, often celebrate human connection, emotion, and spirit. From joyful children to esteemed public figures, her subjects are rendered with a combination of precision and empathy, making her work universally appealing and deeply moving. Her ability to capture the emotional depth of her subjects demonstrates her profound understanding of human experience and her remarkable skill as a sculptor. Jill, 1983 is a tender and affectionate portrayal of Goodacre's daughter. This piece exemplifies her ability to instill a sense of personality and life within her bronzes, transcending the limitations of the medium. Jill is not merely a representation of her daughter but a universal expression of maternal love and the nuanced bond between mother and child. Through careful detailing and the sculpture's expressive posture, Goodacre communicates a wealth of emotion, showcasing her adeptness at personal storytelling through bronze. This sculpture, like many of her works, resonates with viewers on a deeply personal level, highlighting Goodacre's talent for connecting with her audience through the power of art. Goodacre notes, "Jill was an inspiration for more pieces than I can count, like Peasant Girl, Mannequin, and Inner Thoughts." Goodacre's work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Her legacy lives on through her public monuments, coins, and countless other works that celebrate the resilience, beauty, and complexity of the human spirit. This lot is located in California and is being offered in situ. The buyer will be responsible for making shipping arrangements from this location.
